Advice to regularly check earth connection points for the spark unit.

Background
We have had a few cases with machine electrical disturbance, random symptoms, random error messages and input card failure at the spark unit connection.
Those cases has been solved by restoring and securing good connection at the spark unit earth connections and by replacing the input card if broken.

General
We have only experienced this in a few machines but machine stops are costly so we are strongly recommending to do this preventive action regularly to avoid future issues.

Action

Open and check the earth connections, see examples below,

at the spark unit
at the roller or shaft closest to the spark unit
at connection to the machine frame.

Make sure that the contact surface is clean and free from dirt or corrosion.

Restore the connections to get full contact.

1) … at the spark unit.

2) … at the roller or shaft closest to the spark unit.

3) … at connection to the machine frame.

All FAS machines with Omron servo motors with battery backup placed on the cable.

Background
A few machines with Omron servo motor/drives have had stops with alarm code “21 – disturbance servo motor encoder communication”.

Our investigation has lead to the root cause that the backup battery, placed on the cable, due its vibration and movement during machine operation, is causing cable or connector damages disturbing the communication between the motor encoder and the servo drive. Most cases has been solved with adding an extra support to the battery to off-load the cable and connector from the vibrations.

General
We have only experienced this in a few machines but machine stops are costly so we are strongly recommending to do this preventive action and hopefully eradicate the issue.

The backup battery support can be done in many ways, here 2 examples,

With cable connected from below the servo drive, fix a bracket below the servo drive and strap the battery to that bracket

With cable connected from above the servo drive. Attach the backup battery to the servo drive  using Velcro tape.

Instructions for Installation, operation and maintenance of FAS Simco perforation detectors

Background
FAS introduced new perforation detectors in 2014, a joint development with Simco where the electrode heads (1Mohm) are designed for FAS. The detectors have performed very well, incorrect handling and settings has been the root cause for most the few complaints we have received.

General
The Simco perforation detectors works with high accuracy and with good life time if they are set and maintained according the suppliers instructions. With lower power setting the life time can be expected to be longer.

Installation

1. The plastic screws shall be tightened by means of fingers only, no tools shall be used

2. Check that the plastic washer between the housing and the bracket is in place, this is valid even if the holder is made of plastic (lower picture)

3. The unit shall be set parallel and at 2-4 mm distance from the neutral shaft

The unit shall not touch the film.

Operation

With lower power setting the life time is increased. Reduce the power setting until the led stops flashing, then increase the power by using the potentiometer until you have a stable detection.
The Operator panel might be looking different depending on machine type.

Make sure the electrodes are clean
Make sure the neutral shaft is clean
Make sure the film is not touching the detector

Sparks are often not visible with this unit, the green led on the unit is flashing red when a perforation is detected.

Maintenance

• Disconnect the power supply before carrying out work on the unit.

• The electrode head is the only component of the unit that requires maintenance. If needed, clean it by use of a soft non-metal brush
– If very dirty, clean with isopropyl alcohol or with Veconova 10 industrial cleaner
– Make sure the unit is completely dry before operating it againolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Vivamus sagittis nisi eu justo ullamcorper laoreet. Suspendisse vestibulum bibendum nulla, eget tempus orci dictum sed. Vestibulum turpis nulla, ornare a porttitor in, tincidunt id ante. Etiam pellentesque ex vel interdum mollis.
